Art School Interviews: What They Ask and What They're Listening For
Art school interviews are portfolio walkthroughs, not interrogations. Interviewers listen for ownership, curiosity and how you talk about unfinished thinking.
The questions that actually come up
- Walk me through this piece — what were you trying to do?
- What would you change about it now?
- Whose work do you look at? What are you reading or watching?
- Tell me about a piece that failed.
- Why this school, this course?
Notice the pattern: every question invites you to think out loud about your own work. There are no trick questions — but there are rehearsed answers, and interviewers can smell them.
What they're listening for
- Ownership: you made the decisions, and you can explain them
- Curiosity: you look at art beyond your own feed
- Resilience: failure is material, not a secret
- Fit: you know what this course is, not just its ranking
