Discipline guides
What would they actually study?
Twelve creative disciplines explained without mystique — what each one is, what students make, where it leads, and what the portfolio needs.
6 disciplines
Make things.
Disciplines built on images, objects and craft.
3 disciplines
Build systems.
Disciplines built on structures, products and play.
3 disciplines
The band between.
Where art and code stop being separate subjects.
Choosing a lane
The questions families ask here.
How should a teenager choose between these disciplines?
By evidence, not declaration. Look at what they already make without being asked — that behaviour points at a lane more reliably than any conversation. Then test the closest two or three disciplines through small projects before anyone commits to a portfolio direction.
What if my child fits none of these neatly?
Common, and usually a good sign. The band between disciplines — art plus code, object plus story — is where some of the most interesting courses and careers now sit. Read the 'Between' group, and treat the mismatch as information rather than a problem.
Do they need to choose before university applications?
They need a direction, not a life sentence. Applications ask for a coherent portfolio pointed somewhere; degrees themselves allow movement between neighbouring disciplines. Choosing at sixteen means choosing the next chapter, not the whole book.

Not sure which lane fits?
Most children aren't sure either — that's what exploration years and honest conversations are for.
