Digital or Traditional? Choosing Media for Your Art Portfolio
Most strong portfolios mix media: traditional work proves fundamentals, digital work proves range. The mistake is using digital tools to hide weak drawing.

The medium question usually hides a different worry: 'my child only draws on a tablet — is that a problem?' It isn't, if the observational skills are real. It is, if undo and layers are doing the structural work.
What each medium signals
Traditional
Observation, patience, commitment to marks you can't undo. Life drawing, colour studies and physical sketchbooks remain the fastest trust-builders in any portfolio.
Digital
Iteration speed, contemporary workflows, and fit for animation, games and design courses. Show process files and versions — a timelapse can be a process page.
Hybrid
Scan a drawing, rework it digitally, print it, draw over it. Hybrid pieces show exactly the flexibility studio courses want.
