How Students Should (and Shouldn't) Use AI Tools for Schoolwork
The line is simple to state: AI as tutor, not ghostwriter. Use it to question, explain and critique — never to produce work you submit as your own.
Uses that build ability
- Explain this concept three ways, then quiz me
- Critique my draft: what's unclear, what's unsupported?
- Generate practice problems slightly above my level
- Debug my code by asking me questions instead of fixing it
Uses that hollow it out
- Writing essays or answers submitted as your own
- Solving homework you don't then re-solve yourself
- Producing 'original' art or research the student can't explain
