From Science Fair to Real Research: Levelling Up a STEM Project

The difference between a science-fair project and research is a falsifiable question, a method someone could repeat, and honest limitations — not fancier equipment.

From Science Fair to Real Research: Levelling Up a STEM Project

Three upgrades that change everything

From topic to question

'Volcanoes' is a topic. 'Does baking soda concentration change eruption height predictably?' is a question. Questions can fail — which is exactly what makes them research.

From demo to method

Write the steps so a stranger could repeat them and get comparable results. Controls, sample sizes, and measurement rules turn an impressive demo into evidence.

From conclusion to limitations

Every honest project knows where it's weak: small samples, confounds, equipment limits. Naming them is not weakness — it's the clearest signal of scientific maturity a student can send.

What to keep from the fair

The showmanship. Real research still has to be communicated — a clear poster, an eight-minute talk, a demo that works on the second try. Students who can do both the rigour and the room have a rare combination.
