VEX Robotics, Explained for Parents
VEX is the world's largest educational robotics program: an annual game, seasonal design cycles, and judged awards where the engineering notebook matters as much as winning.
How VEX works
- A new game is announced each season; teams design robots to score in it
- VEX IQ (primary age, snap-together) and V5 (secondary, metal and code) are the main tracks
- Teams compete in alliances at local events, qualifying towards national and world championships
- Judged awards — design, innovation, sportsmanship — sit alongside match results
What students actually learn
The robot is the excuse. The curriculum is iteration under deadline: design, build, test, fail, document, rebuild. Add roles — driver, coder, builder, notebook lead — and a season quietly teaches project management to twelve-year-olds.
