When Should Your Child Start Their Art Portfolio? An Honest Timeline
Start foundations by 13–14, the portfolio itself 12–18 months before applications. Starting earlier buys depth; starting later buys stress.
The honest timeline
- Ages 7–12: foundations, not portfolio — drawing habits, colour, making things weekly
- Ages 13–14: skills sharpen; a sketchbook habit becomes the quiet advantage
- 15–16: portfolio building begins in earnest — themes, developed works, critique
- Final 12 months: refine, sequence, statement, photograph, submit
Why earlier isn't pressure
Starting early doesn't mean applying pressure at twelve. It means protecting making time before the exam years swallow it. A child who draws weekly at ten never faces the cold-start problem at sixteen — the portfolio grows out of a life, not a deadline.
