The 18-Month University Application Timeline for Creative Students
Eighteen months out: research and portfolio building. Twelve: shortlist and statement drafts. Six: refine and photograph. Final three: submit, interview, decide.
The timeline
Months 18–13 · Build
- Portfolio work begins in earnest — themes, developed pieces, critique
- Visit course pages and graduate shows; keep a shortlist document
- Start the sketchbook habit if it isn't one already
Months 12–7 · Shape
- Shortlist settles into dream / match / foundation tiers
- Statement drafts start — early, because voice takes iterations
- Fill portfolio gaps deliberately, not by making more of the same
Months 6–4 · Refine
- Sequence and edit the portfolio; mock review with strangers
- Photograph everything properly; digitise and back up
Final 3 months · Deliver
- Submit early where possible — never at the deadline hour
- Interview practice: two full walkthroughs with someone outside the family
Why 18 and not 6
Every stage compresses badly. Portfolios rushed in three months look rushed; statements written in a week sound like everyone's; interviews without practice waste the strongest work. The calendar is the strategy.
