US vs UK Art Schools: Structure, Portfolios and How to Choose
US art programs run broader and longer; UK courses go deep and fast. The portfolio that wins each differs too — range for the US, developed investigation for the UK.
The structural difference
United States
Four years, usually with a foundation year and general-education courses alongside studio work. Easier to switch tracks; the degree is broader and the campus experience wider. Applications typically want range: drawing, colour, ideas, some experimentation.
United Kingdom
Three years (often after a foundation year), specialised from day one. You apply to a course, not a college. Portfolios lean towards a developed line of investigation — fewer directions, pursued further, with process on show.
How to actually choose
- Student who wants to explore before committing → US structure fits better
- Student with a clear direction already → UK depth rewards it
- Compare course pages and graduate shows, not rankings
- Cost and duration differ meaningfully — model both honestly
