Building a University Shortlist: Dream, Match, Foundation
A sane shortlist has three tiers — two dreams, three matches, two foundations — chosen from course pages and graduate outcomes, not ranking tables alone.

The three tiers
- Dream (2): admission would be a stretch on current evidence — but not fantasy
- Match (3): profile fits the typical admitted student; the core of the list
- Foundation (2): near-certain offers at schools the student would still genuinely attend
Research that actually informs
- Read the course page module by module — the degree is the modules
- Look at graduate shows and student work, not just rankings
- Check the teaching style: studio, lecture, crit culture, class size
- Map total cost honestly, including living and travel
Rankings measure institutions; your child attends a course. The right question is never 'how famous is this university' but 'what will Tuesday afternoon look like for three years — and does that Tuesday build the life this student wants?'
