Is Your Child Ready to Study Abroad? A Readiness Checklist

Readiness is four capacities, not one exam score: daily self-management, help-seeking, money sense, and somewhere to belong. All four are trainable before departure.

Is Your Child Ready to Study Abroad? A Readiness Checklist

The four capacities

  • Self-management: wakes, eats, launders and meets deadlines without prompting
  • Help-seeking: will actually email a tutor, see a doctor, ask a question in office hours
  • Money sense: has run a monthly budget — and a small crisis — at least once
  • Belonging: knows how to join things; friendships abroad are made, not assigned

Signals to take seriously

Reluctance that sounds like 'I'm not ready' deserves a conversation, not a pep talk. A gap year, a foundation year nearer home, or a later start are all legitimate designs — the goal is a student who thrives, not a departure date kept.
