Is Your Child Ready to Compete? Five Signals That Matter
Competition readiness is emotional before it is technical. The five signals: they can lose and return, finish things, take feedback, want it themselves, and sleep fine the night before.

The five signals
- They can lose a game and want to play again — the master signal
- They finish small things; competitions punish 90% done
- Feedback lands as information, not injury
- The wanting is theirs: they ask about it, not just answer about it
- Nerves, yes — dread, no
Building readiness gently
- House competitions first: low stakes, familiar faces, short feedback loops
- Watch one event as a spectator before entering one
- Debrief with questions, not verdicts: what surprised you? what would you try next?
The goal of a first competition is wanting a second one. Results are a bonus for years yet.
