Why We Praise the Work, Not the Talent
Children praised for talent learn to protect the label by avoiding challenge; children praised for process seek it. The fix is precision: name what they did, not what they are.
The trap in 'you're so talented'
Talent-praise turns ability into an identity to defend. If being 'the gifted one' is the prize, hard problems become threats — because struggling in public risks the label. The safest move becomes only attempting what already works. Growth stops at exactly the point praise was meant to fuel.
Precision praise, in practice
- Name the decision: 'moving the horizon line changed the whole drawing'
- Name the persistence: 'you rebuilt that arm three times and it shows'
- Name the transfer: 'you used the debugging trick from last month'
- Ask, don't verdict: 'which part are you proudest of?'
